Seymour Duncan's Lipstick Pickups
by Barry Rudolph

Seymour Duncan makes Lipstick Tube Pickups in response to demands by many guitarists for replacement pickups for their Danelectro® guitars as well as pickguard-mounted lipsticks for Stratocaster® guitars. Lipstick pickups look exactly like tubes of lipstick and are made from brass tubes that are chromed and fitted with Alnico VI magnets just like the original Danelectro models. Duncan goes a little further by designing the units with a little more "sparkle, jangle and shimmer" that enhances punch, bite and cut. A new feature is that the neck pickup is reverse wound to hum-buck when the two pickups are used together.

The Stratocaster lipstick is a retro-fit that will give the Strat a smooth and glassy top end and an upper mid-range boost. With good dynamics, a throaty quality and traditional Strat "quack", the ultimate Strat setup would be a Custom Bridge pickup with a reverse wound middle tube and a regular version at the neck. Your five-way switch would give you a good pickup balance, increased output in the bridge position and hum-canceling on switch positions two and four.
