The Dean Icon has been re-designed for 2001 with a re-constructed neck joint making it more comfortable to play and a "strings-thru-the-body" design for added sustain. Features kept from the 1994 original are: arched and quilted maple tops, a select Honduras mahogany body, wood binding and abalone inlays.

The Dean Icon Phantom at $599 MSRP has black Grover tuners and matching pickup covers, Tune-O-Matic bridge, set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and comes in Classic Black. The Dean Icon Standard sells for $499 and has nickel Grover tuners and matching pickup covers, Tune-O-Matic Bridge, same set mahogany neck and rosewood board with abalone dot inlays. Colors are: Powder Silver, Transparent Braziliaburst, Transparent Red. The top of the line is represented by the Dean Icon Special Select at $649 with quilted maple top and everything else from the Phantom but adds abalone hourglass inlays and comes in Quilt Amberburst, Quilt Black and Quilt Blue.
