I am amazed at the new GoPro Hero4 Silver--one of two new Hero4 cameras; there is also the GoPro Hero4 Black. For testing here I got the Hero4 Silver/Music variant--both cameras are available as Music Editions.

So many great improvements with these, they are almost a whole new product line yet carry the same pricing as before. The Hero4 Silver/Music is $399 MSRP and includes: The Frame, rechargeable battery, removable instrument mounts, microphone stand mount adapter, protective lens and cap, 3-way pivot arm, and USB cable.

The most visible change is the touch screen. Heretofore an optional screen plugged into the back of the Hero3+, it is now built into the back of the camera body and somehow maintains the same size and depth. My existing collection of Hero3+ frames and waterproof enclosures are interchangeable with the Hereo4 cameras.

The Hero4 cameras have improved image quality, better low light performance with auto frame rate adjustment and now they have twice as powerful processors capable of up to 2X faster video frame rates. You can record in ultra high-resolution professional level at 4K and 30-frame, 2.7K 50, and 1080p and up to 120-frame rate (Hero4 Black version).

Using one of the new Photo Capture modes called Burst, shooting 12-megapixel photos at up to 30 per second worked well for people or musicians (bands) in constant motion--I could go through successive images and find one or more with everyone in view, smiling, eyes open (or not) and in the clear.

I also tried Time Lapse photography with selectable 0.5 to 60-second intervals and exposure times up to 30 seconds for low light conditions in Night Lapse mode. My favorite photo mode is fast becoming Continuous that takes up to 10 photos a second as long as you hold down the shutter button--machine gun-style--you can't miss!

I found shooting video better than ever! With my GoPro Hero4 Silver, I use QuickCapture for one-button recording of short videos to play on my classroom's large flat panel monitor. I select the wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio and shoot 2.7K (at 30 frames) or 4K video at 15-frames. I also liked using the more standard 4:3 ratio to reduce camera shaking for panning shots or videos on the street for Facebook. Since the touch screen is now part of the camera, it is easy to change these settings at any time as required with each new clip.

But my iPhone 6 is always nearby so using the GoPro app to make advance changes such ISO and setting exposure times etc. makes total sense. Besides Wi-Fi as before, the Hero4 has Bluetooth for connecting the Smart Remote control button. Protune™ is a new feature that provides cinema-quality photo and video capture with manual control over color balance, ISO limit, exposure and more.

Such a big leap from my Hero3+ camera, I'm finding even more ways to use the Hero4 Silver. It has higher quality audio system and I like the Hilight tagging via the touch screen. It lets me mark moments for reference later when I edit the clips the GoPro Studio application on my Mac. Check out www.gopro.com for more about the new Hero4 cameras!
