iKEY Plus Recording Interface iKEY Plus is a stereo audio recording interface that uses any externally connected USB storage device such as a chip-based Jump Drive, USB hard drive or Apple's iPod™ for storing audio files. About the size of a first generation iPod and compatible with both older USB 1.0 devices as well as USB 2.0, iKEY Plus is a complete system--no need to buy anything else apart from USB storage. It directly connects to a phono turntable (using its built-in phono pre-amp) or any -10dBv line level output via a pair of gold-plated RCA jacks. For live recording, there is a stereo microphone pre-amp and included mini stereo microphone. The built-in +48-volt phantom power means you can also connect studio quality microphones for more professional-sounding recordings.

Speaking of professionalism, iKEY Plus records audio in CD-quality 44.1kHz 16-bit .WAV format or as .MP3 files in your choice of 128, 192, 256, or 320kbps data rates. Another impressive pro feature is the set of large, triple-function LED indicators across the front panel--clearly visible day or night. These LEDs indicate record level when in record mode, low batteries (four AAs required), the file format being used, and most interesting, the amount of storage space already used up on the USB storage device. You can record up to 16.5 hours of .MP3 audio on a 1GB USB drive at 128kbps. Recording at high quality 44.1/16 .WAV reduces that time to 1.5 hours--still plenty of time to record a band set or make a copy of a fave CD. Alas no digital audio input for you ersatz music pirates!

Using iKEY Plus is only a two-button process. The SEL button selects what format you'd like and then the REC button puts it in and out of record--pretty simple. But since iKEY Plus is not a computer, it has no way to access your USB storage device to locate specific files for playback. If you use an iPod for storage, you can use it for quick playbacks better yet use a laptop running any stereo audio editor program (many free downloadable one on the Net). Other good features are: DC battery charger/adapter; headphone monitoring jack with volume control; soft carrying case; and easy-to-use record level control for perfect levels.

So there it is--complete recording facilities you can throw in your backpack and use anywhere to record school class lectures, vinyl, DJ performances, live gigs or Podcast content. iKEY Plus sells for $249 and is available from iKEY-AUDIO 732-346-0061 or www.ikey-audio.com
