Da-Cappo Ear Set Microphone from Hosa Technology Hosa Technology now distributes in the Americas the Australian brand Da-Cappo. The DA12 Cardioid Earset Microphone is a new entry in their line of small earset microphone systems. The DA12 uses a cardioid electret microphone element made in Europe and cardioid and makes it a perfect choice for vocal performers using loud stage monitor speakers. The front-facing cardioid capsule, positioned at the corner of the performer's mouth, focuses on the singer's vocal sound (mouth) and rejects all other sounds. Singers who get the typical omnidirectional headworn mics used by corporate or seminar speakers, where the mic pickups freely from all directions, will find they will be severely restricted in their vocal volume before feedback.

The microphone is rated at -51 dB sensitivity (good) and will handle a maximum of 130 dB SPL (outstanding)--singers in loud performance surroundings singing full on will not distort the mic. Conversely, the mic is sensitive enough for quiet singers to convey every nuance of their performance across to the audience. I found the sound superb with a special emphasis on the vocal area of the sound spectrum--a good thing if, as a singer, you are to cut through the 'sturm and drang' of a loud band and be heard and understood.

I tested out the DA12 here at my Tones 4 $ Studios. I used the optional DAADLXL adapter for interfacing the mic to my studio's professional mic pre-amp. In this setup, +48-volt phantom power runs the mic. The mic boom is infinitely flexible and the ear clip is easily adjustable due to an internal steel mechanism. It fits over either ear and connects using a very thin, almost invisible flesh-colored cable. The cable's miniature gold connectors screw into the DA12 and the adapter for an absolutely reliable and solid connection.

I liked the hypoallergenic ear cushion--this is the most comfortable ear set mic I've tested yet--like my eyeglasses--I forget that I'm wearing it. Other features include: a lavaliere style mic clip to secure the cable to one's collar, a zippered leatherette microphone case, a cable, a cable clip, and pop filters.

The Da-Cappo DA12 Cardioid Earset Microphone comes in coffee, beige, or black colors and sells $477 MSRP. Much more at: www.hosatech.com
