Aphex Model 1100 Mic Preamp
by Barry Rudolph

The Model 1100 Discrete Class-A Microphone Tube Preamplifier is a dual channel unit designed for professional recording, broadcast and audio production...and a good bet for the primary recording path in any studio. Featuring 24 bit, 96 kHz AES/EBU digital outputs and Aphex's exclusive MicLim protection circuit, the 1100 delivers a noise specification of -135dB...said to be 10dB better than some other more expensive preamps.

An additional 20dB of headroom is available from the MicLim circuit that intelligently detects and limits the microphone signal before preamplification. There is a low frequency cancellation filter called LoCaf that allows up to 20dB of low frequency cut without using any headroom or triggering the MicLim. Each channel has a tunable low-cut filter ranging from 30-195 Hz, adjustable gain from 21 to 65 dB, output level control and a 20-segment LED headroom meter. Both channels have individual switches for -20dB pad, phase, test tone, phantom power, mute, MicLim and clock (44.1, 48 or 96 kHz and external source). The back panel includes for each channel: XLR mic in, XLR balanced line out, 1/4 inch balanced output, AES/EBU out, word clock in/out and remote control mute jack.

The Aphex 1100 Discrete Class-A Microphone Tube Preamplifier has a retail price of $1,995. For more information, call Aphex Systems at 818-767-2929 or e-mail at sales@aphex.com or WEB to: www.aphex.com
