Grand Ole Opry Guitar from Martin
by Barry Rudolph

June 2000 was the 75th anniversary of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, the world's longest running live radio show. Beginning in 1925, Martin guitars have continue to play an important part for so many of Nashville's most popular artists and the limited edition Grand Ole Opry guitar commemorates and celebrates this long association.

The herringbone HDO Opry guitar's black ebony headplate has the famous WSM radio microphone and stand inlaid using abalone, agoya shell and mother-of-pearl. Details include the famous WSM "spot on the radio dial" logo and a pearloid audio cable encircling the mic stand. The ivory colored fingerboard is also inlaid with red pearlescent letters spelling: "WSM Grand Ole Opry" down the vertical length of the neck and the anniversary years: 1925-2000 inlaid between the 19th and 20th fret.

The soundboard is made from bookmatched, Sitka spruce and bordered with Martin's herringbone wood marquetry with Style 45 abalone pearl rosette. East Indian rosewood is used for the back and sides while the neck is carved from mahogany.

This special edition guitar, of which only 650 will be made, comes with a special interior label with the Ryman Auditorium pictured. The Ryman was the home of the Opry broadcasts for 30 years. The label is signed by Chris F. Martin IV and sequentially numbered. The HDO Opry guitar is available now and for much more about these guitars, you can contact C.F. Martin & Co. in Nazareth, PA.
