RØDE NT4 and NT5 Condenser Microphones
by Barry Rudolph

RØDE NT4 and NT5 Condenser Microphones The futuristic RØDE NT4 stereo condenser microphone has two capsules fixed at a 90-degree angle from each other in an X-Y configuration. A stereo microphone like this makes it a no brainer when recording a rock solid stereo image--just point at the sound source and record it. Great for location recordings, the NT4 comes with a traveling case, stand mount, windshield and custom stereo cables with both XLR and mini jack connectors. The NT4 requires 48V phantom power but a 9V battery will also work.

Sibling microphone NT5 is a true cardioid condenser microphone specifically designed for instrument recording. It is said to be good for recording guitar, flute, violin, saxophone and drums. I like the NT5's small size for sneaking in hard to reach spots in a drum kit and for unobtrusive positioning on stage. I recommend buying NT5s for $599 in closely matched pairs complete with custom carry case, two stand mounts and two windshields. The NT4 sells for $899. RØDE Microphones LLC is at P.O.
