Tascam's 24-bit 788 Digital Portastudio
by Barry Rudolph

Tascam 788 Since 1980, Tascam has sold more than one million Portastudios and the new 788 Digital Portastudio is a 24-bit, eight-track hard disk recorder with an 7.5 GB internal hard drive. You can record six tracks at the same time while eight tracks play back. There is an eight-channel main mixer with a three-band equalizer and stereo auxiliary send on each channel. You also get a six-channel mix (for drums) and an eight-channel cue mix. There are two internal effect processors that can be configured to be either a single stereo effect, channel dynamics across eight channels or a stereo compressor across your mix. Effects include: compression, distortion, noise gate, flanging, reverb, delays, chorus, pitch shifting, phasing and de-esser.

Getting sound into the 788 is by way of four balanced mono inputs and a single stereo input TRS jack. There are both stereo outputs for mixdown to your DAT and stereo monitor outputs for your speakers and/or headphones.

Pro digital workstation features make the unit a very big step up from your old analog Portastudio. You get: auto punch in/out with 99 multi-take function; point search for last punch; auto locate with 999 locates per song; waveform display for editing and low speed playback for scrubbing edit points. You can record up to 250 virtual tracks and using MTC (that's MIDI Time Code), you can lock the 788 to any other MTC device or computer sequencer in your studio. Besides complete MIDI facilities, the 788 comes with a SCSI connector so you can burn CD-Rs of your songs.
