AW4416 Professional Audio Workstation

by Barry Rudolph

The AW4416 Professional Audio Workstation records up to 16 tracks of uncompressed 48kHz., 24-bit digital audio and will be available in June, 2000. There are multiple storage options including an internal hard drive, CD recorder and a SCSI interface for data backup to an external drive.

On the digital mixer side, the AW4416 has motorized faders with automation/snapshot capability and full 32-bit DSP capabilities similar to the famed Yamaha 02R. There are 44 fully automated audio inputs, 17 motor faders, four fader and mute groups, eight bus and aux sends plus stereo, and stereo cue busses. All 44 inputs, including the eight analog and 16 digital inputs via the optional interface cards, contain digital attenuators, four-band full parametric EQ, and direct out assignments. All settings such as scene, channel settings, EQ, dynamics and effects are remembered with each session and stored on the internal hard drive.

I generally look at the rear panel of new gear to learn the real story and the AW4416 has eight 24-bit mic/line inputs, two that are perfect for recording with XLRs, +48V phantom power and inserts, plus a high impedance input that will accept a guitar or other instrument, directly.
