PSP Audioware of Poland has the new oldTimerMB compressor plug-in--it's the multi-band version of their very popular smooth sounding oldTimer compressor.

MB is three OldTimer compressors each for a separate band: High, Middle and Low using filters with selectable slopes for splitting the incoming signal into the three compressors. The Order switch selects how steep the filters can be. They are: a 1st order for smooth 6dB/Oct, 2nd would be for a 12dB/Oct shape and 4th is very steep at 24dB/Oct. By soloing a band you can hear the difference easily when switching through these three choices.

I first tried OldTimer MB on a drum bus that included the kick as I was looking for a tight and thick overall sound--I wanted the kick to merge into and be a big part of that sound and not separated in any way.

For processing the tom-toms in a live drum kit, I was able to get very striking and unique sounds using oldTimer MB. After "chopping" the toms out of and away from the leakage of the rest of the kit, I would shift the toms downward in frequency using PSP's HertzRider Frequency shifter and then adjust the attack and more importantly the length of the tom's sustain using SPL's Transient Designer plug-in.

I liked that I was able to widen the stereo image on only the high frequencies and also make sure all low frequencies below the Low/Mid crossover frequency (200Hz in this mix) were completely mono for maximum punch! I got into the habit of always "testing" the mix monitoring in L+R mono from time to time to make sure the Width was not set too high.

I also experimented with the program-dependent release time modes. When this switch is off, the release time is manually set with the Release time control. The Auto 1 position is from the original oldTimer, and when in Auto 2, you will have is newer modeled program-dependent release time.

So after just this single use, I am completely impressed with oldTimer MB! I like its resizable GUI, its overall ease of use and flexible design, and the great set of presets included. I found many presets immediately usable for guitars and keyboards. This is a very flexible, good sounding and well-thought out product! Super highly recommended!

PSP's oldTimer MB sells for $199 downloadable. It runs in DAWS that support Native (VST, AU, RTAS) in MACs or PCs.
