Antares Auto-Tune Vocal EQ
Antares Audio Technologies Auto-Tune Vocal EQ

Auto-Tune Vocal EQ® is a purpose-built vocal finishing tool/processor; I followed it only with a compressor plug-in and got a top-notch vocal sound. A-T Vocal EQ starts with a six-band fully parametric equalizer with Auto-Tune pitch tracking and a dynamic equalizer available on each band. There are separate variable high and low cut filters with 6, 12, 18, and 24db/octave slopes, a 2.5kHz to 40kHz air-band EQ, individual band solo/mute buttons, and a switchable Tilt feature I used at the end of my EQ process to slightly "slant," up or down, to finely adjust very slightly the overall finished EQ setting to the track. Brilliant!

You may watch a singer's pitch as it moves across the frequency spectrum in real-time and then lock an EQ band to track the fundamental or the harmonic of the vocal. Vocal Learning automatically determines the singer's vocal range be it: soprano, alto-soprano, low male, an instrument or bass.

I got the best sound ever on a problematic female lead vocal that (in past mixes) required a lot plug-ins, automation, clip gaining to get it to sit and sound good in an R&B track. My process started with setting up a high-pass filter to roll out room rumble and occasional p-popping. Next, I let Band 1 frequency-track a -2.2dB dip centered at 250Hz (Q of 2.2). This thinned out the singer in places so I added back 1dB at around 400Hz fixed. Band 3 was set at 550Hz but I used that band's dynamic EQ.

Dynamic EQ is an awesome way to control the strange resonances that can be recorded with the vocal. Band 4 was at 1326 Hz but I used slight expansion to bring that band up slightly dynamically. Band 5 was bypassed but Band 6 was set to 5800 Hz and I used the dynamic section as a de-esser that worked very well because you can see the exact problem areas right in the spectrum analyzer at the bottom of the GUI. Lastly, the air band was set to 15kHz with a 13dB of boost! This worked great to keep a bright sound but not make the singer sound brittle. Auto-TuneŽ Vocal EQ is a big winner for me! It sounds as natural as you want and is indispensible for wrangling a good sound out of poor recordings and/or singers with difficult-to-capture vocal performances.

Current Auto-Tune Unlimited subscribers have immediate access to Auto-Tune Vocal EQ at no extra cost. Auto-Tune Unlimited is $24.99 paid monthly, or $14.58 a month with paid annual subscription. A free 14-day trial is available. Considering all the plug-ins in this bundle, WORTH IT!
